History Meets Renovation
The Montgomery signifies a union between the iconic old neighborhood and the new era of retail and service that Sheridan’s Main Street has to offer. Erected in 1936 as Montgomery Ward, a historic department retail store, there’s something special about tying in the old and original with the updated and fresh renovation of The Montgomery.
Since its original construction in the ‘30s, “The Montgomery” has seen its share of rich history in Downtown Sheridan. Throughout the years, the spot on Main Street has been home to a wealth of historic establishments. Before the construction of the building you see today, the Sheridan Post Office resided in the space on the second floor while E.I. Mills Stationary & Drug Co. operated below on the 1st floor. In 1910, the space would become Sheridan National Bank. In 1927 Economy Drug would take over the spot until its reconstruction in 1936 as Montgomery Ward.
Montgomery Ward existed in Sheridan as a mail order and department store from 1936 to 1970, the building’s most prominent and original proprietor. Montgomery Ward’s shared downtown Sheridan with a number of department stores in its time. JCPenney, The New York Store, Woolworth’s all had their place and purpose serving Sheridan’s patrons in the early to mid-1900s. The main floor and downstairs were active, and the upstairs spaces (now living spaces) were mainly used as freight rooms. Since the closing of the Montgomery Ward era in 1970, The Montgomery has served a number of shorter-lived industries from a fabric’s supplier, furniture and appliance store to a collectibles provision. The Montgomery has served Sheridan’s downtown through a number of industries and offerings, its contribution and presence throughout Main Street’s history is as undeniable as it is exciting with the newly renovated, customizable retail & living space that is The Montgomery.
We invite you to be a part of the building’s new life and our quest to revitalize downtown Sheridan. Live and work in an iconic piece of Sheridan’s history, in the most eventful area of Main Street and without the usual worry of matters typical of older spaces like this one, The Montgomery is renovated and ready.
